Denim Day and Intimate Justice
The students involved in my internship had sewn flags to represent the meaning behind "Denim Day". This is a day dedicated and supporting those who have been sexually violated or assaulted. It is an event in which people often wear jeans/denim to raise awareness of rape and sexual assault. It is a strong movement and a privilege to take part in something that I, personally, deeply stand for.
Peace Over Violence takes honor in Sexual Violence Awareness Month. It was taken notice after a woman in the 1990's had been raped by a man who felt eager to act on his impulse due to her wearing tight clothes. The Italian Supreme Court had let the man go due to the justices beliefs that the victim has implied consent due to them thinking she must have assisted him in removing her tight jeans. Once notified about this, the women in the Italian Parliament attended their work wearing jeans to show respect to the victim. This is an activism that needs to have more awareness.
To honor this, my friends and I spent roughly about a month sewing flags with symbolized statements on them such as "Intimate Justice" in order to represent this day of awareness.
